With Swachh Bharat abhiyan
of Prime Minister Narwndra Modi ,lot
of awareness has been created and being created to remove the waste (kachara)
from public places. It is a good beginning.
This
also leads us to the question, ‘why produce this waste? The concept of zero waste is not new.
It is being practiced at many places worldwide. Though the concept is too
abstract to become relity in daytoday life everyehre, the efforts in this
direction may yields surprising results.
Working
on the principle of ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’, the waste or kachara can be
reduced significantly with very little effort / initiatively. It is just a
matter of habbits and aking initiative.
Whenever
we see the kachara being littering at some public place, we start blaming the agency
responsible for handling this waste. But blaming alone wil not help to solve the
problem. The fact is at that most of the places, the agencies responsible for
garbage handling are over loaded.
The
practical and effective solution could be to reduce the production of kachara itself.
With reducd production of waste, our homes and work places will beome smart.
We
can start this exercise by paying attention to the dustbin or kachara-dibba of
our house/work place.
Reduce
We
can contribute with little change of habits like not using polythene bags for
shopping or promoting
Recycle
We
can recycle the green waste (main part of kichen & garden waste)by composting.
Items like books/papers/iron & metalisc waste part, some plastic part can be
sold for recyclers rather than throwing into waste basket.
Reuse
Many
alternative uses can be thought for the items which loose its value as primary
use. For example a broken bucket can be used as a flower pot, an old Tshirt can be converted to a bag.Perhaps
you might have seen such examples sometime somewhere. The items having residual
value can be sold off or donated for someone needing these.
Cumulative
savings
If we
reduce even 100 gram waste per house everyday ,the cumulative saving in a
residential complex of 5000 people will be more than 2 lakh Kg in a year (And
associated saving of handling costs/efforts for that). More than rational &
nobel it is also an economical solution.
So why not go for it. Find ways to reduce the
amount of waste produced by you and promote waste-lessness.
