Vegetable
and fruits are required by all of us on daily basis as a part of food we eat.
The requirement for one individual is not much on daily basis-just few grams
depending upon personality/food habits.
To fulfill this recurring need, we are normally dependent on market. And if you add
up the recurring costs for your entire lifetime, you will be surprised to see
the number. More surprisingly, it is not the cost of raw vegetable/fruits you
pay but a substantial portion of it is of overheads like preservation and
transportation charges. There are many agencies involved before these items are
made available at the vegetable/fruit vendor shop. From the farm house where it
is grown it is subjected to packing, transporting and unpacking sometimes
several times. It may take few hours to even few days to reach the destination.
All these processes on one side add to the cost on the other side dilute the
quality of item. More delays/time involved, more stale the item becomes and
sometime even becomes non usable at the time of actual requirement.
One
simple solution to above mentioned problem is to produce the vegetables and
fruits at your home itself.
The
first question which comes to mind for a common person not having the luxury of
having garden is the availability of space. Yes it is a serious problem but
where there is a will, practical and innovative ways can be found out.
Some
of the places can be rooftop & flower pot (gamala). In case of acute
shortage of space, even hanging pots can be used.
You
need not to be holding an agriculture degree for doing this job. Use of commonsense
is enough. Discuss some of your friend, relatives or acquaintances who have
knowledge /interest in the field and do a bit of experimentation. It can be fun also and can be developed as a
hobby besides reducing some of your recurring expenses and giving you a healthy
lifestyle. You can even go organic and get closer to mother earth.
Above
all it will be a service to the society by making the earth more green and
beautiful.
